Hancock residents to rely on mutual aid

HANCOCK, Wisconsin — The Hancock Volunteer Fire Department is closed as a former chief officer tells WAOW that the reason is increased training mandates.
Erik Johnston, the now former assistant chief told WAOW reporter Amanda Lojewski that a state decision forced the closure of the fire department.
Johnston said that the state mandates have increased making it difficult for volunteer firefighters to keep up on training, something that they have been struggling with.
The Hancock Volunteer Fire Department will remain closed until volunteers catch up on their required training.
The closing of the fire department has prompted confusion and
questions for residents over what to do in an emergency.
Officials say that the residents are covered and that assistance from
firefighters in Plainfield, Coloma, Wautoma, and Big Flats will respond to calls
for assistance.
