FDIC 2018: VEIS Addressing Flow Path and Victim Removal

Learn how the modern fireground impacts ventilate, enter, isolate, and search (VEIS) and what to do to provide the highest level of survival and safety for the victim and firefighter. Topics include flow path control, survival profiling, heat release rates, and the limitations of modern personal protective equipment. Techniques for dragging and carrying victims to safety and managing a victim on a ladder are introduced. Proper tool and ladder selection for first and second floor VEIS along with methods of accessing the room to be searched are covered. Students participate in scenarios over the course of the class.   

This four hour hands on class will be delivered in an acquired structure. Rooms will be modified to create a realistic occupied residential structure. Smoke machines will be used to create a low visibility environment similar to a working fire. Students will use on another along with rescue mannequins to perform the various drags, lifts and carries. We will also be using window props with steel sashes and plexiglass panels that realistically simulate real windows. These VEIS window props allow the student to physically break the glass and knock out the sash just like a real window. The prop can then be reset in less than 30 seconds for the next student to perform the scenario. The student will get perform both first and second floor evolutions over the course of the four hour class.
