Air bags and crane used to free worker

ATLANTA – 11Alive reported that several people were injured and one needed rescuing after a collapse of a parking garage under construction.

Atlanta firefighters are on the scene in the area of West Peachtree Street at Linden Avenue, near Emory University Midtown Hospital.

Atlanta Fire Deputy Chief Riley told 11Alive that firefighters received the call at 11:37 a.m. for a piece of the parking deck that had collapsed, with one person was trapped.

Because of the way the collapse happened, Riley said they used airbags to help raise the debris off the trapped person.

Firefighters also had to use the crane the crane to lift the debris high enough to remove the trapped worker. Deputy Chief Riley said the crane operator was operating blind, relying on communication from a fire captain for direction.

After approximately 11 minutes, the trapped worker was freed and transported to the hospital with a leg injury minutes. The rescue was over in under an hour.
