Fire in apartment inhabited by squatters

3:25 PM – Heavy Smoke & Fire pushes from 2 story apt. bldg. at 37 N Traub w/ reports of possible occupants inside. #IFD crews locate & rescue a 74 y/o male on the 2nd floor in extreme critical condition. Transported to Eskenazi. Blaze marked under control in 30 min.The fire initiated in the vacant apartment on the lower floor – reportedly inhabited by squatters. 16 occupants inside structure — 10 of which were the reported squatters — 6 other occupants displaced
#WTFD assisted. The fire is under investigation.

IFD Firefighters also rescued 2 cats (mother and father) and 2 kittens from the blaze. The mother (Tigger) was critical but revived by IFD Firefighter Isaac Torres who offered her his SCBA regulator until the Project Breathe Mask was retrieved. The father and 2 kittens were ok however 3 additional kittens perished.

The IFD EMS Duty Officer (EDO) took the critical momma cat to the Veterinary Specialty and Emergency Care (VSEC) which is part of Noahs Animal Hospital on Stop 11, as part of the IFD DART program (Domestic Animal Rescue Team)
