Petersborough Scanner Feed – Just after 4:30a.m. Firefighters were responding to a medical call in East City, when they crossed the Hunter St bridge they discovered heavy smoke in the area of Hunter St. E. and immediately reported a structure fire. Firefighters quickly responded, while firefighters were entering the building a second floor window smashed out and a person could be heard screaming for help.
Firefighters ran into the building and located the victim on the second floor, they were carried out and firefighters immediately began providing medical care to the patient. Paramedics arrived on scene and began treating the patient before transporting the patient to PRHC in critical condition. The fire quickly spread as flames could be seen shooting out the second floor windows, firefighters extinguished the flames and began ventilating the heavy smoke as occupants watched from across the street. A occupant of the building told me how he just woke up and was making his tea when he heard the alarm bells activated, he immediately evacuated the building and then seen the smoke coming from the building.
Members of the Peterborough Disaster Relief Fund were on scene to assist the displaced occupants. Fire prevention officers as well is city police are on scene, I believe the Ontario Fire Marshals office will be called in due to the injuries. Hunter Street is currently closed between Burnham and Mark St and I would expect crews to be on scene through out the day investigating.
