A woman was rescued Thursday after falling 55 feet down a well in the Marion County community of Scotts Mills.

The 80-year-old fell through a wooden covering on top of the well about 11:30 a.m., officials said, and tumbled down the shaft before coming to rest on an outcropping partially submerged at the bottom.

As emergency crews were making their way to the scene, a quick-thinking neighbor grabbed a rope-and-pulley system and lowered themselves into the well to keep the woman upright and out of the water.

First responders from Silverton Fire District used a hoist to bring the woman out of the well. She was conscious, officials said, but injured and “very hypothermic.” She was taken a hospital in serious condition.
