BELLEVILLE, Illinois — KMOV4 and the Belleville Fire Department report that a newly installed smoke detector helped save the life of a resident Wednesday evening.

The fire department said that earlier a suspicious fire was found smoldering on a rug draped over an exterior door. Firefighters discovered the house had no working smoke detectors, and they installed one before leaving.

Approximately three hours later, a second fire occurred at the home.

When firefighters arrived, the first floor was blocked by heavy fire and they rescued a woman out of a second-floor window.
