A 9/11 Tribute in San Diego

September 11, 2012 — It was somehow fitting that the skies over San Diego remained overcast all day as the world remembered 9/11. In San Diego’s Balboa Park, the World Memorial organization set up a massive display, which allowed people to stop by and spend as much time as they liked viewing images from Ground Zero, reading accounts and talking with responders who were on scene.

First responders know the history of the 9/11 attacks and the aftermath well, but many of the civilians attending the event were learning and seeing things they never knew, even after 11 years have passed. Many sat mesmerized as they listened to audio from that day.

As the sun set, many stayed, waiting for the arrival of FDNY Lt. (Ret.) Joe Torrillo, who flew in to attend the event and say a few words. Having been buried by debris from both towers and living to tell about it, “Lt. Joe” held the crowd spellbound with his stories.
