With nine members of the department departing this month, and three more already gone over the summer, a five-year standoff between the Town of Hamden and the firefighters union over its next contract is beginning to take a toll.
The Register-Citizen reports firefighter pensions are one issue driving the exodus of fire personnel. Reductions in pension benefits are being proposed as part of a new contract – five-years in the making.
Firefighters who retire this year will be eligible for the benefits outlined in the last contract, which expired in 2015, but once a new contract is in place, pensions could be reduced.
