Loss of Firefighters is Hard on Evansville Fire Department

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (Courier & Press) – Only a week after losing a captain, Evansville Fire Department is mourning the death of another firefighter.

FirefighterNation: Veteran Indiana Firefighter Killed in Shooting

Robert Doerr II, 51, had changed his Facebook profile photo to an image of an EFD badge with a black band across it in memory of Capt. Jim Pauli, who died last week.

By Wednesday, people were posting the same image in honor of Doerr, who was shot and killed Tuesday night on the North Side.

“It’s a roller coaster,” said city firefighter Larry Wildt. Wildt was Doerr’s best friend and said he’s known Doerr since 1985. “I don’t wish it on anybody.”

Wildt and EFD Division Chief Mike Larson shared memories and details about Doerr Wednesday morning during a press conference called by the Fire Department.

Doerr was a private at EFD and had worked there for 27 years, Larson said. He was part of the crew at Station 1.

“He always had your back,” Wildt said of Doerr. “Never afraid to go into a fire with him.”
