Syracuse, N.Y. — A home in Syracuse’s Valley neighborhood was damaged by a kitchen fire Sunday evening.

The fire at 225 Riverdale Drive was reported around 8:10 p.m.

Firefighters found smoke coming from the second floor when they arrived, according to District Fire Chief Elton Davis. He said it took about 20 minutes to put out the fire.

The people living inside the home, plus their two pets, were able to get out on their own, Davis said. Six people were receiving assistance from the American Red Cross, he said.

The fire started in the kitchen of a second-floor apartment, according to a news release from Capt. Phillip Vogt, a fire department spokesperson. It began on the stove due to the unattended cooking, he said.

The home’s second-floor apartment suffered fire, smoke and water damage, Vogt said. The first-floor apartment sustained some water damage, he said.

No injuries were reported.
