Firefighters battling the Pilot Mountain fire in North Carolina changed tactics Monday, moving from trying to stop the fire to managing it with a controlled burn designed to direct the fire to fire containment lines, Fox 8 reports.

The fire is now expected to affect 1,000 acres of the Pilot Mountain State Park. The fire broke out Saturday on one of the park’s most popular trails.
