Alborn (MN) Chief Blows Up Golf Cart, Sparking Wildfire and Months of Controversy

The Alborn fire chief touched off a 30-acre wildfire when he and his family exploded a golf cart with 30 pounds of Tannerite.

Former Alborn Fire Chief Robb O’Bey touched off a 30-acre wildfire in August when he and his family exploded a golf cart with 30 pounds of Tannerite ignited by a rifle shot, KBJR reports.

Firefighters from three area departments as well as the state Department of Natural Resources were called in to suppress the fire, leaving O’Bey with a bill for more than $100,000.

Over the next months, controversy over the fire grew as the fire department fired a member who brought forward an anonymous complaint about the fire and replaced O’Bey as chief.
