ELBA, N.Y. (WIVB) – The heat was a major obstacle for firefighters battling a huge barn fire in Genesee County.
About 25 departments responded to the scene late Thursday afternoon on Town Line Road in Elba. But firefighters faced high winds, water shortages and stifling heat from the start, and could do little to stop the fast-moving fire from spreading.
Emergency Management Services deputy coordinator Keith Hunt said, “The problem is it’s compounded by the heat. The guys can’t work as long in this kind of heat and we have to work long to rehydrate them and get them in a rehab situation and that’s really what necessitated calling so much equipment in.”
One fireman was taken to the hospital to be treated for heat exhaustion. A neighbor down wind was treated for smoke inhalation.
