It may not be often that a fire chief lobbies against increasing funding for his department, but that’s what happened in Madison, Wisconsin.
Fire Chief Steven Davis told the finance committee of the Madison City Council that it is “a little premature” to transfer close to a million dollars from the city’s police department budget to the program operated by the fire department that responds to mental health crises, the Wisconsin State Journal reports.
The city’s mayor had proposed the transfer of funds. Davis said he would be better prepared to determine the funding needs of the newly launched mental health response unit after it had operated for a year.
