Polk County is spending $68 million to build 17 new fire stations, and retrofit older stations, with design features that reduce the risk of firefighters contracting cancer from their environmental surroundings.
The new stations have color codes in rooms – green, yellow or red – that tell the occupants whether they need to limit their time spent in that area due to the presence of carcinogenic materials. In addition, living quarters, exercise rooms and gear cleaning areas are all segregated to reduce exposure to carcinogens like engine exhaust and fire debris.
