VA Firefighter, 70, Dies in Line of Duty After 49 Years of Service

Boiling Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department firefighter Steve A. Weikle, 70, died following a medical emergency that occurred shortly after responding to a structure collapse call on February 13, 2025.

Weikle, a 49-year veteran of the department, had been actively involved in a response to a structure collapse where farm animals were trapped inside.

While no firefighters were injured during the rescue operation, Weikle was later found in cardiac arrest outside his home.

“Steve was a cornerstone of our department and the community,” said Ken Martin, President of the Boiling Springs Fire Department said in a statement. “His dedication and service over the past 49 years have left an indelible mark on all of us.”

Funeral services take place on Tuesday, February 18, 2025, at 1 p.m. at the First Christian Church, 231 East Fudge Street, Covington.

The Boiling Springs Volunteer Fire and Rescue Department, along with the broader Alleghany County community, is rallying to support Weikle’s family during this difficult time. His decades of selfless service and commitment to saving lives will not be forgotten.
