TX Fire Department Tests 48/96 Schedule for Better Rest and Work-Life Balance

The Longview Fire Department is introducing a 48/96 work schedule for firefighters to improve firefighter well-being and operational efficiency.

After decades of working 24/48 shifts, firefighters voted to adopt the 48/96 model. The trial period will last one year before determining if the change will be permanent, CBS 19 reports.

Data showing that the 96-hour break allows firefighters to achieve better rest and return to work more refreshed was one reason for the shift. Beyond improving rest, the department hopes the new schedule will enhance efficiency and reduce delays in task completion.

In addition, it hopes the schedule change will reduce burnout, improve retention and recruitment, reduce sick time, and reduce overtime.

As the trial period progresses, the department will evaluate the impact of the new schedule on performance, morale, and community service.
