LA Firefighters to Receive Free Cancer Screenings Under New Law

Beginning in 2025, fire departments in Louisiana will be required to offer cancer screenings to current and former firefighters at no charge.

Earlier this year, Louisiana passed Act 554, requiring local governments and non-profit departments to provide free cancer screenings to firefighters who are on the payroll, KTAL reports.

The screenings must, at a minimum, cover 11 specific cancers and must be offered repeatedly every three to five years, depending upon the firefighter’s age.

Cities and towns are already gearing up to begin offering the tests in the new year, KTAL reports.

The screenings typically cost $1,300 per person.
