Hundreds of firefighters gathered at the Michigan State Capitol Tuesday, urging lawmakers to pass House Bill 4688, a measure they say will allow fire departments to negotiate staffing levels for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Currently, Michigan firefighters are among the few in the nation who cannot negotiate staffing levels, leading to concerns over safety, fatigue, and mental health.
Proponents argue that the bill would help address the shortage of firefighters per capita compared to neighboring states like Ohio, improving both firefighter and public safety.
However, the Michigan Municipal League opposes the bill, citing concerns that it could unfairly burden municipalities. Despite being introduced six months ago, the bill has made little progress, leaving many firefighters frustrated.
