Winnipeg Firefighters Rack Up Record Number of Hours Lost to Mental Injuries

Winnipeg paramedics and firefighters lost thousands of work hours in 2024 due to psychological injuries, placing greater strain on those remaining on the job.

Data from the city shows between January and October 2024, 189 psychological injury claims from Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) members were processed, CBC reports.

Through October, 17,626 hours of leave had been granted to firefighters and paramedics, an increase of more than 7,000 hours from five years ago.

Union officials pointed to burnout and mental stress from excessive overtime as the cause.
