CENTRAL FALLS — Two men were shot — one of them killed — Tuesday night near a public basketball court that was in the news recently because the city plans to close it next month to build tennis courts.
The police went to the court in Sacred Heart Park, on High Street, after receiving 911 calls for shots fired at 8:51 p.m., according to Major Christopher A. Reed.
Arriving officers found Malcolm Sostre, 28, of Central Falls, lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. He was taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.
A second man, age 19, whom police had not identified by early Wednesday, was found about a block away, where he fled after the shooting. Suffering from a single gunshot wound to the head, he was also taken by ambulance to Rhode Island Hospital.
The police said he was in serious but stable condition and was expected to recover.
The police ask anyone who witnessed the shootings or who has information about them to call (401) 727-7411 or (401) 727-7420. All calls will be kept anonymous.
The basketball court was the scene of a protest last month, when the city announced that it had received grant money to convert the site to tennis courts.
