For the second time in less than a month, the Wilmington Fire Department has had a piece of apparatus struck on the highway while responding to a call.
The department’s Tower 1 was blocking traffic at a motor vehicle accident on I-93 Sunday night when it was struck by a passing vehicle.
No one was hurt in the accident and the damage to the rig was described by the department as moderate. It’s expected to be back in service within a week.
The accident comes on the heels of a May incident in which an ambulance was struck while responding to an accident also on I-93. In that incident the firefighters and a patient in the accident were treated for minor injuries.
The department repeats its requests that people slow down when approaching emergency vehicles.
This is yet another reminder to slow down and proceed with caution around emergency vehicles with their lights on. Tower 1 was hit tonight on 93 while blocking traffic during a motor vehicle crash. The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody. #slowdownmoveover pic.twitter.com/k6Dum4BwZz

This is a stark reminder to slow down and proceed with caution around emergency vehicles responding with their lights on. Multiple firefighters/patients were transported to the hospital early this morning with injuries due to an MVA on 93. pic.twitter.com/eYwlE4SzuQ
