Uvalde (TX) Fire Chief Visited School as Dad in the Morning and Firefighter in the Afternoon of Shooting

On the day a shooter arrived at the Robb Elementary School to kill 21 students and teachers, Fire Chief Mario Rangel had just left the building after an awards ceremony for his daughter’s class.

Rangel who works at the town’s radio station had returned to work when the word began circulating about the shooter.

Rangel headed to the school as a parent to find out what was happening, but soon had to assume his firefighter responsibilities handling traffic and assisting EMS along with the rest of the 38-member Uvalde Fire Department.

The experience was, Rangel told KXON, personal and stressful as he carried out his duties, initially unsure of his daughter’s condition.

Rangel’s daughter was not injured in the shooting.
