Too-Risky-To-Fight Fire in Salinas (CA) Food Plant Burns Overnight; Ammonium Nitrate on Site

Update: Thursday afternoon, the Salinas Fire Department reported the fire was contained and all evacuation and shelter orders were lifted.

Firefighters are urging residents to shelter in place or evacuate in areas around the Taylor Farms food processing facility in Salinas. Schools have also been closed for the day.

Firefighters responded to the fire at about 7 p.m. Wednesday, but were confronted with a rapidly growing fire that forced firerfighters to back off fighting the fire due to dangerous ammonium nitrate at the facility.

Firefighters suspect the fire was started by welders working at the factory preparing it for its seasonal opening. The plant was a total loss.

Description

This class covers the gap between the entry level training ground and the real-world fireground. Our instructors will share the skills and techniques they have developed through their diverse experience. These skills and techniques have allowed them to overcome common obstacles to be perform rapidly and efficiently to achieve success. The students will work in small groups focusing on improving their skill set in the primary functions of Engine and Truck Company operations. Then the students will put these skills to the test in fireground scenarios operating in an IDLH Atmosphere while overcoming realistic challenges and obstacles.

Methodology

The students 8-hour day will be broken into 2 sessions.
The students will be broken into small groups. Instructors will take care to place students in working groups that are like their typical crew size.
In the morning session students will rotate through skill stations focusing on Engine and Truck skills. Instructors at each station will provide information on a specific skill set, and then allow the student to complete the skill. The instructors will provide feedback and assist the student in adjusting to enhance their performance of the skills.
The afternoon session consists of several full-scale incident simulations. Conducted in an IDLH environment with challenges they will find in the real world. Students will work together to complete the scenarios using the skills they practiced and enhanced in the morning session. Students will rotate through the different unit level assignments to practice their skills as much as possible.

Learning Objectives

Students will be given skill sets and then practice them in scenarios which replicate the actual fire ground as closely as possible.
Skills can be adjusted to the level of the student. Instructors will evaluate students’ abilities in morning skill stations, give them advice and instruction to assist them in taking their craft to the next level.
Instructors will provide additional insight in overcoming challenges of staffing, building construction or response difficulties as needed.
