Today’s Firefighting PPE Issues

This is an overview of cancer-causing carcinogen contamination of firefighter PPE and the firefighters themselves from the perspective of an involved person. It will provide insight that includes discussion and data on realistic protection expectations and is devoted to the explanation, identification, and justification of the increasing risk of cancer that firefighters face, along with strategies and practices for carcinogen contamination reduction. It starts with a recap of how firefighter PPE works and the protection rendered to the firefighter. It evolves into a discussion of the chemicals and carcinogens that are generated as by products of the fire. Information on routes of contamination is presented along with data on justification. The information is based on personal experience, anecdotal data, picture and video, and personal video message from an affected person.
