CHEEKTOWAGA, New York — On Tuesday firefighters from the South Line Fire District gathered together to bring one of their firefighters home from Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center.

Seven years ago, WKBW reported about Firefighter Gus Buczek. The 55-year old U.S. Marine Corps veteran was in the firefighter bootcamp putting 18-and 20-year old recruits to shame.

The fire department quickly became Buczek’s second home.

Moving forward to this week, firefighters from that second home lined the walkway in front of the cancer center and saluted Buczek ahead of his final ride home.

Buczek has terminal pancreatic cancer and according to WKBW will begin receiving home and hospice care.

“When one of us hurts, we all hurt,” Fire department chaplain Tim Kopp told WKBW.
