Survey: Firehouse Values and Culture

Harassment and bullying have become a critical area of concern in the fire service

Center for Fire, Rescue & EMS Health Research (CFREHR)
National Development and Research Institutes, Inc. (NDRI)

This survey is being conducted by the CFREHR (Drs. Jahnke, Haddock & Poston). We have an office in Leawood, Kansas which has focused on promoting the health and well-being of first responder groups, including the fire service and military, for over 20 years.

Harassment and bullying have become a critical area of concern in the fire service; from face to face and online intimidation to extreme instances of harassment resulting in assault.

These negative behaviors erode safety and teamwork in addition to being in stark contrast to the fire service core values of duty, pride, and tradition and put departments at risk for litigation.

Participation consists of completing one web-based survey estimated to take between 30 minutes and one hour. This research will collect information about norms and practices within the fire service to determine best practices, shape future efforts to curtail these concerns, and identify ways to appropriately train personnel to respond to concerns.
