Stray Balloon in Power Lines Sparks Chaos at LAX, Sending Los Angeles (CA) Firefighters Scrambling

A Mylar party balloon got caught in power lines Saturday morning, shutting down power at Los Angeles International Airport and the surrounding area.

The outage resulted in dozens of calls to the fire department, many for people stuck in elevators, as the airport was jammed with holiday travelers.

Firefighters responded to extricate people from the elevators as the Department of Water and Power worked to clean up the outage.

The power went out around 10:30 a.m. KTLA reports and wasn’t fully restored until 4 p.m.

The Mylar balloons can short out power lines when they come in contact with them. Roughly 200 outages a year are caused by runaway balloons.
