Lexington County firefighter hit by semi-truck

LEXINGTON COUNTY, S.C. — A Lexington County firefighter was killed Friday while on the scene of vehicle crash according to county officials.
WIS reports that Lexington County Fire Service Fire Engineer Paul Quattlebaum and his partner were en route to a medical call at approximately 3:30 Friday when they noticed a crash near the 5200 block of Fairview Road.
Both firefighters stopped to check on people involved in the crash. During that time, Quattlebaum was struck by a semi-truck.
Quattlebaum received immediate treatment on the scene and was transported to a nearby hospital where he died.
Quattlebaum was a native of Batesburg-Leesville and a member of the Lexington County Fire Service for 22 years. He started in the fire service as a volunteer in 1997 before becoming a full-time firefighter in 2000.
Prior to being a firefighter Quattlebaum was a lance corporal with the United States Marine Corps where he served as a field radio operator from 1992 to 1994 before receiving a medical discharge due to an injury.
The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
