San Antonio Firefighter Fatally Struck

SAN ANTONIO, Texas – A San Antonio firefighter died at a local hospital after being struck by a vehicle Tuesday morning.

KSAT reports that Firefighter Greg Garza was part of a group of firefighters who responded to an electrical problem at the Comfort Inn Suites in the 500 block of Live Oak around 7:00 a.m.

Firefighter Garza stumbled while exiting a fire truck and was hit by a pickup truck according to San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood.

Garza, a 17-year veteran of the department, suffered a traumatic arrest at the scene and was transported to Brooke Army Medical Center, where he was succumbed to his injuries.

San Antonio Police Department spokesperson Officer Doug Green told KSAT that the incident was a matter of poor timing as the firefighter was hit just as he got out of the vehicle.

The driver of the truck stopped and is cooperating with the police. The police department’s traffic division is investigating the incident.

The injured firefighter’s name and age have not been released.

A press conference has been planned for noon.
