Russell (KS) Fire Chief Injured in Garage Fire Explosion

Russell Fire Chief Dylan Riedel was airlifted to a hospital Friday after being injured in an explosion at a garage fire.

The fire call came in just after 9 p.m. for a structure fire at 1706 N. Main Street. Shortly after the first units arrived on the scene, an explosion occurred, injuring Chief Riedel, the city reported via facebook.

Russell County EMS transported him to Russell Regional Hospital. He was then transported to a burn unit at Via Christi hospital in Wichita by EagleMed.

The Wichita Eagle reports he was in fair condition on Saturday.
Fire crews contained the fire to the garage. The Kansas State Fire Marshall is investigating the cause of the fire.
