Every organization wrestles with its own set of challenges; for the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC), this is especially true as we prepare for our strategic planning session, which will take place Oct. 27-29. Nevertheless, neither the IAFC nor any other group should adopt the philosophy to stay “as is” in our rapidly changing world. As Thomas Paine once said, “There is a better way-find it.” Even in his day, people understood that they must work to improve themselves.
The IAFC constantly looks for ways to improve its services to its members, but as we begin developing our strategic two-year plan, which will be released in January 2007, we must keep in mind the challenges that will accompany our pursuit of improvement. During my acceptance speech at Fire-Rescue International in Dallas, I noted one challenge in particular that has the potential to greatly affect our organization: getting our state chief’s associations more involved with their IAFC divisions. I asked all of our members to accept this challenge, and with the large number of outstanding fire officers in our organization, I have no doubt we will conquer it. Note: If you haven’t become involved with your division, please do so.
Another issue we will continue to discuss that could greatly benefit the organization involves expanding our membership. State chief’s organizations are our greatest asset in this endeavor because they not only bring in new members, but they also introduce these new members to their IAFC divisions. As a result, these divisions can create a vast network filled with highly trained personnel who can contribute a wide variety of skills, experiences and information to the IAFC’s existing members.
In addition to its challenges, the IAFC has enjoyed its share of successes. Like all organizations and fire departments, we must always keep our eye on the ball when it comes to our financial future, and the IAFC has successfully maintained a strong and secure financial foundation. Our board, treasurer and executive director maintain a conservative investment policy and use sound fiscal policies and practices that optimize our financial security.?In October, we will review this financial strategy, balancing programs and services with projected revenue and available resources.?The IAFC treasurer, Chief Julian Taliaferro, will continue to provide leadership in this key area.
In writing this letter, I want our members to understand that these are just a few of the many issues up for discussion in October, but the IAFC makes great strides each time we reevaluate our strategic plan. With good planning comes sound decisions. Although we will continue to face challenges, jump hurdles and enter gray areas, with a good strategic plan and the unity of our members, the IAFC will not only survive, it will continue to move forward as the voice of the fire service.
Finally, for those attending the strategic planning session, I hope it is a rewarding event that fulfills your expectations. And I want to thank each of you for the time and effort you contribute to our strategic planning session. The Board of Directors and the Executive Committee look forward to working together with all of you.
