Raleigh (NC) Mayor and Fire Chief Try to Calm Citizens About Short Staffing, Out-of-Service Rigs

Raleigh firefighters touched off concerns in the community when it announced two pieces of apparatus were placed out of service for a day on Saturday.

The announcement on social media suggested staffing shortages correlated to the decision to take the equipment out of service.

Chief Herbert Griffin did an interview to explain how the department handles out of service units, a situation that occurs even when departments are fully staffed for issues like training and maintenance, he says.

Raleigh’s Fire Department currently has 65 vacancies, but does expect to bring on 55 new firefighters by the end of the year.
