Portland (OR) Firefighters Battle Ross Island Fire

blaze Saturday on Portland’s Ross Island has been extinguished, a spokesperson for Portland Fire & Rescue said Sunday.

The fire, which sent black smoke billowing over Portland, started around 4:30 p.m. It burned equipment from Ross Island Sand & Gravel and tractor tires but no structures were involved, said Katia Minor, a firefighter and Fire Bureau spokesperson.

Crews returned to the island Sunday to check for hot spots, and the fire was said to be out by 11:30 a.m.

The Fire Bureau on Sunday provided dramatic photos of the event, which firefighters partially battled by boat from the Willamette River.
