Phoenix Chief Announces Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner revealed the information on Facebook

PHOENIX — Phoenix Fire Chief Kara Kalkbrenner announced she has been diagnosed with breast cancer and will undergo surgery.

The announcement on Facebook, reported by ABC 15, said that Chief Kalkbrenner will have a double mastectomy surgery on December 13.

Kalkbrenner wrote that the diagnosis cam after she discovered a lump several weeks ago.

“Our department is fortunate to have the exemplary team from the Vincere Cancer Center in our court. The physicians used state of the art diagnostics to determine the best course of treatment,” Kalkbrenner wrote.

Kalkbrenner became chief in 2014. She has been outspoken about the risk firefighters face in getting cancer.
