St. Matthews Fire & Rescue would like trains to notify the department when trains are parked on tracks blocking response routes.
Blocked roads are a fairly common occurrence in the area, but recently a citizen documented a fire truck and rescue approaching an intersection and having to turn around due to a train stopped on the track.
After two false starts, the crews reached the nursing home they were responding to. But they were delayed for ten minutes because they had to reroute onto a highway to reach their destination.
In this case, the call was minor and the delay was not significant. But Assistant Fire Chief David Hauser said he was grateful for the video, in hopes it might prompt the railroads to work on a system to notify first responders when trains are blocking the tracks.
