RIO GRANDE CITY, Texas — The Rio Grande fire chief is using a fatal fire to remind people to not live in places of business.

KRGV reported that an overnight fire at the Mesquite Grill and Country Store began at approximately 2:30 a.m.

Firefighters found an unresponsive 31-year old woman inside the building.

The woman was transported to Starr County Memorial Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The owner of the restaurant told KRGV that the woman would sometimes spend the night inside the business.

Fire Chief Manuel Muniz said that all businesses are subject to inspections when they open and after that only when there is remodeling or when a complaint is filed.

Chief Muniz said that the business wasn’t in violation of the fire code and recommended people not sleep overnight in businesses.

City officials told KRGV that other codes may prevent dwelling inside a business.
