WASHINGTON (ABC7) – Three people are waking up as heroes Wednesday morning after rescuing an older neighbor from a burning home Tuesday night in Northeast Washington.

Fire officials say the man suffered critical injuries and was rushed to an area hospital. People who know the victim say he goes by the name of “Mister Hill” and he’s known for always helping others.

The neighbors involved in the dramatic rescue included one former and one current D.C. firefighter. Officials say the fire occurred on Clinton Street.

“I opened the door. I saw the flames. By the time I got across the street, I saw Tory Smith and Garry Wiggins at the door. Once we were able to get the door open wide enough to get inside, Tory found him, got him to the door, and we were able to pull him out,” said DC Fire Deputy Fire Chief Robert Pearson.
