Jonathan Creek captain was en route to an accident

WAYNESVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina community is mourning the loss of one of its firefighters Friday morning.
WLOS reports that Jonathan Creek Volunteer Fire Department Captain Claud G. Messer died after being involved in a crash while responding to a traffic accident.
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol stated to WLOS that Messer was driving his marked truck, with lights flashing, down Jonathan Creek Road at 6:00 a.m. when a logging truck ahead of him attempted to make a turn.
Messer’s truck collided with the rear of the logging truck. He was the only person in the vehicle.
State troopers described the scene as difficult for the first responders, many who knew Captain Messer for several years.
Messer, 74, was a founding member of the Jonathan Creek Volunteer Fire Department and was also chair of the department’s Board of Directors.
Troopers are investigating the events leading to the fatal collision.
