GOLDSBORO, North Carolina — A North Carolina firefighter has died after having a medical emergency during a structure fire.

WBTV reports that Thoroughfare Volunteer Fire Department Safety Officer Joe Tucker suffered a medical emergency after responding to a structure fire in Wayne County on Sunday.

Tucker, 62, was transported to Wayne UNC Health Care in Goldsboro where he was pronounced dead.

FOX8 and WRAL report that Tucker was operating a fire truck and handling hoselines during the fire.

According to the Wayne County Firefighters’ Association Tucker is survived by his wife, children and grandchildren.

The cause of his death is not being released at this time.
