The Texas Supreme Court Friday threw out a referendum vote that would have given firefighters pay parity with police.
The 2018 vote approved a referendum to set the salaries of firefighters on the same level with police, but the measure has been tied up in legal challenges by the city and its police department.
The case rose all the way up to the Supreme Court, and on Friday the court tossed out the peoples’ vote.
Instead, the court ordered the city and firefighters to begin bargaining for a new contract to set salaries, which have not risen in the years since the referendum.
