Nevada Trooper, Assistant Fire Chief Killed at Traffic Stop

ELY, Nevada — A man is in custody for killing a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper and stealing his uniform and vehicle near Ely on Friday morning, according to News 4/Fox 11.

On Friday morning Sergeant Ben Jenkins had stopped to help a motorist on US-93 near mile marker 106. When Sergeant Jenkins approached the driver, John Dabritz, he was shot and killed.

Dabritz was located after a search and taken into custody.

Sergeant Jenkins joined the Nevada Highway Patrol in 2008 as a Trooper. Prior to his time with the NHP he was a training officer for the Nevada State Fire Marshal Division, a crew supervisor of the Nevada Division of Forestry, and the assistant chief of the Spring Creek Volunteer Fire Department.

Jenkins was also a veteran of the Army National Guard and the Air National Guard.

Jenkins is survived by his wife, mother, four children and five grandchildren.
