Montclair (NJ) Investigates Racism Charge in Exams, Council Requests Hold on Fire Department Promotions

The Montclair Township Council has hired a lawyer to investigate claims by two black firefighters that recent promotional exams were designed to reward white firefighters over black candidates.

The town’s Civil Rights Commission brought the complaints forward, charging the promotional process was selectively altered in the most recent instance to include some background issues and ignore others, such as seniority, to favor white candidates, Northjersery.com reports.

One township councilor has asked the department to hold off making promotions while the matter is investigated.
