MIAMI — Miami-Dade Fire Rescue says that the firefighter who fell down an elevator shaft on Tuesday is in critical condition, according to CBS Miami.

Ericka Benitez with Miami-Dade Fire Rescue said that Firefighter David Gonzalez is in serious but stable condition in ICU after surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital’s Ryder Trauma Center.

Gonzalez and other firefighters were called to rescue a person inside a stuck elevator at Bal Harbour Shops.

As firefighters worked to remove the person from the elevator Gonzalez suffered a “long fall.”

No details were provided about what led up to the fall and the distance.

Officials said an investigation will take place to determine what occurred.
