Memphis (TN) Protesters: ‘We Are Gonna Hold the Fire Department Responsible, Too’

Protesters in Memphis began demanding the fire department explain its actions involving 29-year-old Tyre Nichols’ death while in police custody, ABC 24reports.

Nichols was beaten by five Memphis police officers after a traffic stop. He subsequently died of those injuries. The officers have been fired and face criminal charges. Video footage of the incident was released on Friday, touching off protests.

Meanwhile, the fire department has suspended two firefighter/EMTs while it investigates the incident. Questions raised focus on whether the firefighters on scene did enough to aid Nichols and the response time for an ambulance to arrive and take him to the hospital.

The Fire Department has said it will review the video, which it only received access to on Friday, and conclude its investigation this week.
