NEW HAVEN, Connecticut — A mayday was transmitted during a basement fire in New Haven that eventually went to three alarms.

WTNH reports that firefighters responded to 55 Benton Street on Sunday evening for a reported basement fire.

New Haven Fire Chief John Alston told WTNH that during the fire a crew became trapped in the basement and a mayday was announced.

One firefighter was transported to the hospital for evaluation.

There was no word on the conditions that led up to the mayday.

The Director of New Haven Emergency Operations, Rick Fontana, said that one resident was transported to the hospital for smoke inhalation.

The fire eventually went to three-alarms before being extinguished.

There was no word on the cause of the fire.
