Lightning Strike Sets Off LA Oil Tank Fire

A lightning strike touched off an explosive oil tank fire in Cheneyville Sunday.

The fire started around 9:30 p.m. near the 1-49 Turkey Creek exit in Rapides Parish.

Several tanks were involved in the fire at a facility owned by Houston-based Perdido Energy

The Lecompte Volunteer Fire Department (LVFD) and Evangeline Parish Ward 5 Fire Department along with departments from Echo, Cheneyville and Turkey Creek assisted at the scene.

Firefighters determined the safest course of action was to allow the tank fires to burn out, and they waited out several small explosions until the fire was finally controlled by Monday morning.
