A lightning strike at the ND Paper Mill in Rumford prompted a power outage that led to a chlorine gas leak Friday.
The power went out at the paper mill at around 3:45 Friday afternoon shutting down the plant’s ventilation system. With the power out, chlorine began building up inside the plant.
When power was restored, the ventilation system pushed a green cloud cloud of built-up chlorine gas into the atmosphere, the Rumford Falls Times reports.
A hazmat crew and state environmental officials responded to the incident. No one was injured.
