Kalispell (MT) Fire Department Considers Axing Residency Requirement

Kalispell is considering eliminating its residency requirement for firefighters.

The current requirement, adopted in 1981, mandates Kalispell City firefighters live within three air miles of the city or a location where they can report to the station within 15 minutes, KPAX reports.

Over the last 40 years, however, the city has had increasing difficulty finding applicants who want to meet that requirement. And, expanded mutual aid agreements makes it less important that all city firefighters live in close proximity to the fire station.

The city will vote on the issue on June 7.
